Enneagram Personality Tool Resources for the Beginner

Books, Podcasts, and more

As you may know, I love sharing my wisdom of the enneagram with others through my in-person, virtual, and on-demand Explore the Enneagram workshop series. The enneagram has been so beneficial to my life and work and I’ve seen the knowledge transform others as well. It’s unlikely I’ll ever stop talking about the enneagram! 😉

I’m often asked what my favorite resources are for those who are just diving into the enneagram and those who are looking to dive a little deeper, so I decided to put together some resources for the beginner today. More coming soon!

Books

The Essential Enneagram by David Daniels and Virginia Price is what I’d consider the absolute best starting point to learning about the enneagram personality typing tool.

My favorite things about this book:

  • There is a narrative typing tool in the front of the book. If you don’t know or aren’t sure of your type this is amazing!
  • It breaks down each type and all the (very) basic information to of each type in a simple and easy to understand way.
  •  Great synopses of relationships between each type in the back of the book.

The Road Back to You by Ian Morgan Cron and Suzanne Stabile is a great, quick read that helps you start to really understand your type.

My favorite things about this book:

  • Great style of writing and storytelling that is compelling and makes a quick read.
  • Audio book available that is easy to listen to!
  • Optional study guide to assist your journey.

The Enneagram by Helen Palmer is the book you buy after you’ve read the ones above and have an overwhelming need to know more! That’s what happens when you get into this… you just can’t stop!

My favorite things about this book:

  • Each chapter shares more in depth information about each type yet still in an easy to read format.
  • The real life examples that are given throughout each chapter!

Podcasts

There are many podcasts that I recommend and they all follow various formats. For the beginner, I recommend checking out the podcasts below and choosing an interview with a person of your type (or the type you think you are). I found that in the beginning of my enneagram journey, it was really helpful to hear someone of my type talk about their life and experiences. Even though we are all very different people, I felt seen.

Conscious Construction – In addition to interviews, Abi has panel discussions with people who share a type. Definitely worth a listen and as an enneagram 8, Abi has given me so much insight into 8s in relationships with others.

The Typology Podcast – This podcast is with Ian Morgan Cron (author of The Road Back to You above) and has many quick listens. If you’re a busy person without much time, but want to absorb more info – listen to this podcast! Pro tip: listen in 1.5x speed to save even more time! 😉

For the Love of the Enneagram – Jen Hatmaker hosted a series about the enneagram on her podcast. I’ve linked the first episode with Suzanne Stabile. This is a great listen about the enneagram as a tool and then to continue on to each of her interviews with different types. I honestly think some type interviews lacked the substance you can get elsewhere, but I still listened to all of them. Ha.

Accounts

If you use Facebook or instagram, there are many enneagram accounts that are both fun/funny and educational. Sharing a few of my favorites below!
