Communicate

Share openly with your teammates within their preferred communication style and listen actively. Yes, this means you must ask your coworkers how they prefer to receive information both literally (written, voice, in person) and delivery (direct, pro/con/pro). It is often very hard to take that first step and have a conversation about HOW to communicate but it is necessary and worth it. Once you do that, you must communicate within those shared preferences. Doing this will build trust and respect.

Active listening is not natural for everyone so if that applies to you – acknowledge it and accept it. It’s okay. Some of us are more talkers than listeners and we’ve often spent our whole lives talking and others listening to us. It’s hard to switch roles with intent. Listen without distractions or interruptions, clarify what’s been said, confirm that you understand. These actions will show how much you value a person and the relationship.

teamwork

Understand your roles and responsibilities and set clear goals – both individual and shared. You’ve likely heard people talk about staying in your lane and that’s where I’m going with this. Fully understand and acknowledge what your role in the team is and what others are expecting from you. Do your part to meet those expectations (assuming you all agree on them) so others know they can rely on you.

Teamwork only makes the dream work if everyone is pulling their own weight…

Stress management

Recognize emotions (both yours and others) and understand how they will impact conflict. Know when it’s a heated time and things need to be left alone for now. Step away and take breaks as you need them. Communicate how you are feeling.
